ERHS Calendar - Week of 11/5/18

Dear ERHS Students and Community,

The ElRo spirit was in full effect this past week as our Fall Spirit Week brought the community together and much needed smiles to our school. From students, faculty and staff donning their costumes on Halloween, to rocking their pajamas on Pajama Day, to sharing outfit styles on Twin Day and students representing the colors of grade, it was a terrific week at ERHS. The week culminated with our school community coming together for the annual International DInner where we tasted the culinary diversity of our school community, while being entertained by several of our talented music groups and even a “dancing banana”. We had special guests share great news, including Assemblywoman Rebecca Seawright’s commitment to a new $125,000 technology grant for the school, to help replace some of our aging school tech. We were also joined by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, who helped found the school 18 years ago and Councilman Ben Kallos, who continues to support ElRo afterschool programs through CASA and other important grants, including one to renovate our Library & Resource Center.

As Election Day is finally here next week, please remember that there are no students in attendance on Tuesday, 11/6 and more importantly all are encouraged to vote. As this year’s early voting participation breaks recent records, the nation seems more interested and involved in this year’s election and with good reason. Wherever you stand on issues, we can all agree that a healthy democracy is built on the involvement of its citizens. Be informed and if you want to know more about where the candidates stand on the issues, visit Vote411.org and be a more informed citizen. There are many important local, state and federal positions on the ballot. Please vote, help others who need help getting to the polls (elderly neighbors) and be an active part of the political process. As we get closer to Election Day, please see a special message in this week’s ElRo Corner, from former ERHS Network Leader Sanda Balaban, currently the Co Founder/Director of YVote (short for Youth Vote), an organization dedicated to getting our youth to participate in the political system.

Thank you to all in the ElRo community who participated in Fall Spirit Week and the International Dinner! We appreciate everyone who contributed to this week.

Thank you to the members of the Gender Sexuality Alliance Club who put up a new display on the first floor entitled LGBTQ+ Icons that features several past and present individuals that made/make a positive difference in the fight for equal rights and excelled in their own fields.

Our interest in learning more about one another and appreciating the diversity of our community, from culture, race, sexual orientation, gender ethnic background and beyond, is what makes us fuller and stronger. Thank you for being ElRo Equity Warriors!

Sincerely,

Mr. Saliani

Principal

ElRo Corner

Dear ERHS Community,

A few days from today, we have the power to radically reshape what democracy looks like in our country.  Please help us turn out 1 million first time voters next Tuesday. It will only take a few moments of your time, but could mean a huge difference for our nation for years to come.

Just read through the three potential actions to see which small step(s) you can take to help us create historic new levels of youth voter engagement:

1)  Donate and encourage people to donate --anyone who donates over $25 can receive one of our new edition YVote Totes (photo attached.)

2) Share these award-winning videos promoting youth voting and/or these inspiring keynote remarks by four of our YVoters to the standing room only crowd last Friday.

3) If you are not yet connected to meaningful in-person, phone, or text canvassing and would like to be, we'd be happy to help plug you in.

THANK YOU for this final push to create a stronger, more vibrant, more representative democracy!

Sanda and Team YVote

This is the area where you will come to check out the current results and recaps from the latest games. This is also the area where you will look to see when sports interest meetings are planned for the upcoming season.  Remember, if you will be trying out for a team, you will need a current medical form filled out by a doctor, and a parent consent form. LIBRARY & RESOURCE CENTER

The first Cartoon Caption Contest appears to be a big hit- the Suggestion Box is full of yellow post-its containing your brilliant ideas. The cartoon is posted in the LRC (to the right of the front door as you enter), and near the elevators on the first floor. You can take a picture and mull over it at your leisure. The winner will be decided by Ms. Mendlowitz and Mr. Cacioppo, right before the Thanksgiving break. You can submit as many captions as you want, but don’t forget to put your name on them.

We just got in a particularly great crop of new fiction that’s being showcased on the slatboard along the LRC’s entryway. Ms. M has included a synopsis of each one.

We are happy to see that the puzzles are still attracting so many of you. Please honor the time and effort of those who are working to complete them. Think about how you would feel if someone thoughtlessly destroyed something you had helped  create.

Finally, if you use one of the Chromebooks, please return it to the COW in the Resource Room, and make sure to plug it for recharging. If there isn’t a recharging plug available, slide the Chromebook into one of the bottom slots.

Sometimes, our hustling, bustling city allows us an opportunity to slow down and let nature surprise us.

Last week, this rare, Mandarin Duck was spotted in Central Park. How it got here is a mystery- and a lovely one.
