ERHS Calendar - Week of 11/26/18

Dear ERHS Students and Community,

Welcome back from the Thanksgiving Break! I hope everyone had quality time with loved ones and got some well deserved rest as we officially enter the holiday season. Though we will be inundated with advertising and so many deals on material things throughout this month, I hope each of you looks past all of that and remembers what is truly important. Spending time with family and friends, to learning something new and exploring your interests, some you might not even know you had, is so much more fulfilling than getting things. Last week, in 12th grade advisory, we discussed happiness and gratitude, including watching this short video and reading this article. It is sometimes difficult to realize that happiness comes from within. I know in my advisory we have been talking about some very heavy topics in the past months and it was a treat to really think about what makes us fulfilled as people. We shared something we are thankful for in our lives and most of what was shared had to do with relationships and not material things. I hope you take the time to share with one another, as families and friend groups, being real with one another, in a positive and supportive environment.

This week we will have our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday evening, 5-8pm and Friday afternoon from 12:30-2:30pm. We hope all families can attend and meet with all faculty. To inform new families and remind returning families, each teacher has a sign-up sheet, for a three minute time slot, at the entrance of the classroom. Student volunteers are in charge of the schedule. Timing is key, so sign up for a time slot, please arrive on time, and respect the three minute meeting time. There is a one minute interval between each meeting. If more time is needed, please arrange for an extended meeting with the faculty member. As a reminder, first marking period grades should be treated as an interim report and everyone should be working towards supporting our students towards expanding their learning of the subject matter and growing their skills in each class. Let’s all remember that high school classes are challenging and it should be expected that there is healthy struggle at times in places.

We will have our makeup PTA meeting and the special presentation, What to Expect from the College Process starting at 4pm, featuring Ms. Allison Kleiman (College Counselor) on Thursday, before the evening conferences. All are welcome to attend. A follow up email with information will be sent by Ms. Kleiman to all families. This will support anyone that cannot attend the session. On Friday we will have our annual Career Day, where students are exposed to multiple careers by volunteer professionals. No regular classes will occur on Friday and students will be dismissed at 11:30am.

Congratulations to the ERHS Girls Volleyball team that has reached the PSAL City Championship after an undefeated season and a run through the PSAL playoffs. The girls take on two-time defending champion Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy this Wednesday evening at York College. See Coach Peter D’Amico’s letter in the ElRo Corner for more details, including special transportation to and from the match. Go Huskies! He also shares about a special Science based trip over the April Break to, wait for it...the Galapagos Islands! Very exciting opportunity for students and faculty to travel to this very special place in the world.

Good luck to everyone taking the SAT this Saturday.

Sincerely,

Mr. Saliani

Principal

ElRo Corner

Dear ElRo Community,

Our trip to the Galápagos Islands has been approved! During Spring Break, members of our community will have the opportunity to travel to Ecuador and explore its capital city, Quito, stand on the equator, visit the Charles Darwin Research Center, and of course, see tortoises. While these experiences may be the highlights, there are many more activities and explorations planned. If you are interested in learning more about the trip, including logistics, itinerary, and cost, please come to the interest meeting on Tuesday, November 27 at 6pm in the auditorium. We will be giving away 3 - $100 discounts for anyone that attends and signs up for the trip. Note: if you have traveled with EF (our tour company, Education First) before, you will automatically receive $100 off the trip. If you can't make it but are still interested in learning more, please email me at pdamico@erhsnyc.net.

On another note, the Girls Varsity Volleyball team will be competing for the PSAL B Division championship at York College on Wednesday, November 28 at 6pm. The girls have had a great run this year, including an undefeated regular season, winning two weekend tournaments, as well as their first Manhattan South division championship. Our PTA has graciously offered to provide us with two school buses to bring fans to cheer the girls on against two-time defending champion Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy. The buses will be leaving at 3:30pm on Wednesday, and returning at approximately 8pm. Members of the the team will be in the lobby Monday afternoon during lunch periods for students to sign up to take the bus to/from the game. We appreciate your support as we try to bring home ElRo's first PSAL Championship since 2005-2006. Hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Mr. D'Amico

This is also the area where you will look to see when sports interest meetings are planned for the upcoming season.  Remember, if you will be trying out for a team, you will need a current medical form filled out by a doctor, and a parent consent form. You can pick up both forms in the PE Office on the 2nd floor.
